Rather than face actual accountability when they break the law, the trucking industry has hired an army of special interest lobbyists to try and let them off the hook. Contact your legislator and tell them NO!
When an 80,000-pound semi-truck crashes into your car, chances are it will be fatal. With truck drivers pushed to skip legally required rest breaks, and not properly monitored for drug use and drunk driving, deadly crashes are common on Iowa’s roads. Just days ago, an Iowa law enforcement officer almost lost her life when a commercial vehicle smashed into her.
HF 772, is a special interest lobbyist's wish list. It forces a capped dollar value on the life of an Iowan if you’re killed by a negligent or distracted driver. It allows corporate trucking companies -- even out of state and foreign-owned companies -- to hide information from the public when they break the law. This radical plan even shields these companies from facing accountability for punitive damages, which are meant to hold the worst actors in the industry accountable for egregious wrongdoing.
If this radical legislation passes, Iowa will be among the lowest liability states in the nation for trucking – meaning corporate trucking operations will route their highest risk drivers to our roads. Iowans will be left with higher car insurance rates because of all the accidents.
This legislation rigs the legal system in favor of corporate trucking companies when they kill Iowans on our roads. We cannot let the lobbyists win. Your Constitutional right to trial by jury is at stake.
Ask your lawmaker to vote “NO” on HF 772.
